The area is under the spotlight again this week, amid growing speculation about Ukraine’s long-awaited counteroffensive.
In April 2014 armed Russian-backed separatists seized government buildings in the Donbas and the Ukrainian military launched an operation against them. Russia covertly sent troops, tanks and artillery into the Donbas, which helped pro-Russian forces consolidate gains made.
Russia officially recognized the Donetsk and Luhansk regions as independent states on 21 February 2022 and deployed troops to those territories. On 24 February, Russia began a full invasion of Ukraine.
Most military analysts believe that liberating the whole of the Donbas would be a very difficult challenge.
Ukraine has stated that its objective in this conflict is to liberate Ukraine from Russia’s illegal invasion forces.
