Mera Bharat Mahan or Land of Scams? India this day on the midnight of 1947 attained freedom from the British Rule to face poverty, unemployment, dismal health scenario.

From Lata Mangeshkar’s monumental song Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon sang on 27.01.1963 to commemorate sacrifices of Indians who had died during the 1962 Sino-Indian War that had brought tears in the eyes of then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Bollywood continued to springs up one after another patriotic song with beautiful lyrics capable of leaving listeners teary-eyed that make us all of us proud as Indians, including Chak De India to Maa Tujhe Salaam, the evergreen song of music legend AR Rahman that touches souls of every Indian. But are the Indians reflecting the spirits of these patriotic songs in their actions?

Why the attitude of Indians has gone from bad to worse for their nation?

Where did they lose their nationalistic spirit?

What is the meaning of celebrating national days including Independence Day and Republic Day?

Are these celebrations for namesake only?

Every Indian has two mothers – one biological one and two Mother India. After the biological one gave birth and nourished each of us with her nectar, each of us is being taken care of by Mother India with her unflinching motherhood.

Does each Indian not responsible to pay back to their both mothers? Are they doing their moral duty to the life-givers? Why all have been influenced by materialism giving goodbye to their humanism? Where is the Bahrat that made every Indian proud once?

Why and how Bharat the looters turned our nation into a land of scams?

1948 Jeeps scam: After Independence, the GoI signed a deal worth Rs 80 lakh with an England company to supply 200 Jeeps. Only 155 Jeeps were delivered and then India’s high commissioner to England VK Krishna Menon was embroiled in the controversy. The case was closed in 1955 and later Menon become former Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru’s trusted aide and India’s defense minister; 

1987 Bofors scam: The deal for 400 Bofors guns was worth $1.3 billion in which allegedly Rs 64 crore was paid to middlemen; 

1999 Coffin scam: Coffins were purchased to sent bodies of 1999 Kargil war martyred soldiers to their families. The CBI had registered a case against a US contractor and some senior Army officers; 

1993 Telecom Scam: That had caused loss of Rs.1.66 crore to the exchequer; 

1999 Tehelka scam, Tehelka.com, an online news portal revealed how army officers and political leaders were involved in taking bribes during arms deals. The sting operation had shown former BJP president Bangaru Laxman taking a bribe of Rs 1 lakh;  

2008 2G Spectrum Scam: Telecom minister A. Raja was charged for causing a loss of  Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the exchequer;  

2009 Satyam Scam hit Indian investors and shareholders hard,  through masterminded by then Satyam Computer Services chairman Ramalinga Raju involving Rs. 14,000 crore (one of the biggest scams in the corporate world); Infamous 2008 

2008 cash-for-votes scandal: Allegedly masterminded by then Opposition BJP politician Sudheendra Kulkarni in which the UPA allegedly bribed BJP MPs to survive a confidence vote;  

2009 Madhu Koda & associates scam, –  Rs 3,356 crore; 

2006-10 Mining scandal:  over $3bn (£1.8bn) forcing Karnataka CM BS Yeddyurappa to quit; 

2010 Commonwealth Games Scam: Rs. 70,000 crores;  

Coal Scam – Rs 1.86 lakh crore; 

Chopper Scam – USD 610 million & Tatra trucks scam in which former Army Chief General VK Singh alleged that he has offered Rs 14 crore as bribe to clear purchase of 1,676 Tatra trucks for the Army (all in 2012);

Barak missile scam, 2013: 7 Barak missile systems worth Rs 1,150 crore bought from Israel at a much higher rate than initially quoted despite objection by then president APJ Abdul Kalam;  

2018 biggest banking scam:  Punjab National Bank has been allegedly duped of Rs 11, 300 crores, and main accused Nirav Modi escaped from India; 

Vijay Mallya: Greatest financial offender Perhaps India’s most famous financial offender with his UB group having loan worth Rs 9,000 crore in various banks & living in the UK; 

Lalit Modi: Accused of money laundering with his political clout as a cricket administrator & living in the UK since 2011; 

Sanjeev Chawla:  Accused in the match-fixing scandal in 2000, living in London since then The list is endless, what to talk of Black money in Swiss banks: Money parked by Indians in Swiss banks rose over 50% to Rs 7000 crore in 2017, reversing a three-year downward trend. This came as a surprise given India’s continuing clampdown on suspected black money stashed abroad, including in banks of Switzerland that used to be known for their famed secrecy walls for years.

Arunachal Pradesh is no exception either: Multi-crore PDS scam (2004-07) which was handed over to the CBI in December 2017; former CM Kalikho pul in his suicide not ‘Mera Vichar’ named some sitting as well as former Supreme Court judges and senior Congress politicians in a 60-page suicide letter in August 2016 and his wife had demanded a CBI probe into the corruption charges;  

Sangti villagers land scam: Five Sangti villages namely Gombu, Sang Leto, Pem Tsering, Serpa Dorjee, and Tsering under Dirang police station of West Kameng district, had moved against Arunachal Pradesh Govt through advocate T T Tara claiming compensation for 75 acres of community land in Sangti village. The land was handed over to the ITBP without any payment to them. Total compensation amounting to Rs 17,74, 56,860  was paid to only one family.  Gauhati High Court judge Ajit Barathakur, while disposing of petition WR (Crl)03 (AP) 2018 – Sangti villagers Vs state of Arunachal Pradesh, in his verdict said: “In the case, in hand, a perusal of the case prima facie, disclosed alleged commission of the cognizable offense, such as forgery, criminal breach of trust, cheating, etc. Therefore in such a fact case situation, the law requires that a case is to be registered first on the complaint and then to investigate and TAH land scam amounting to Rs 236 crore. Former PM Rajiv Gandhi in 1987 had said that only 15 paise of Re one development fund reach the beneficiary. The loot continues while money inflation has been skyrocketing. Mera Bharat Mahan

While saluting the sacrifices of innumerable freedom fighters led by Lal-Bal-Pal and Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi after 71 years of independence, it is high time for Indians to introspect and retrospect where the nation is heading to, the value of freedom they earned and take bold steps to regain our lost glory.
